- The German astronomer Johannes Kepler advanced
- the work of Copernicus, declaring in his "Astronomia
- Nova" (1609) that the planets move around the sun in
- elliptical orbits which he mathematically defined in
- this work and in his later work, "Harmonices Mundi"
- (Harmonies of the World) which was published in 1619.
- By abandoning the idea that the planets moved in
- perfect circles (not elipses), Kepler created a model
- of the solar system which was consistent with the
- relatively accurate planetary observations of his
- era.
